Solar Panels Vs. Photovoltaics
Solar power is a form of energy harnessed from thepower and heat of the sun’s rays. The most common way of harnessing energy from the sun is through photovoltaic (PV) panels – those large, mirror-like panels you’ve likely seen on rooftops, handheld solar devices, and even spacecrafts.
So what are Photovoltaics? Solar cells, also called photovoltaic (PV) cells by scientists, convert sunlight directly into electricity. PV gets its name from the process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage), which is called the PV effect.
The Differences: Whilst solar panels are photovoltaics (PV), PV systems do not operate in the same way as ordinary solar panels… Solar panels effectively are a system that converts the Sun’s energy (light), into heat energy which can be used to directly heat water as an alternative source. However, they do not generate electricity. PV systems are solar systems that are designed to generate electricity directly, instead of being used for heating water.
